The Basilica of San Gavino is a unique monument in Italy, as it is designed with two apses faced, as well as being the largest Roman monument of the island. In its crypt dating back to the 7th century, the relics of the Turritan Martyrs are kept together with two sarcophagi from the Roman era. It is part of the monumental complex of Monte Agellu, erected on a hill that was part of the necropolis of an ancient Roman colony and that, in its most fascinating part located below the Atrium Metropolis, tells a story rich in details of the city in Roman times.
The charming churches of Balai Vicino and Balai Lontano complete the picture of the ancient bond of these lands with the Holy Martyrs Turritani. The church of Balai Vicino or San Gavino a Mare, was built in the rock and overlooking the sea right where they were initially buried, while the small church of Balai Lontano, was erected on the cliff where they were probably martyred the three saints.
