Porto Azzurro, the former Porto Longone, today graceful touristic destination, perfectly witnesses the complex history of the Elba island, that has always been a place of conquest with a strategic importance for the political balance of the European states. Starting from the historical centre, the route first follows the seaside perimeter of the impressive San Giacomo stronghold, built by the Spaniards in the XVII century, with spectacular views on the coast facing Italy . Then, it goes on between the perfumes of the Mediterranean scrub and the trace of the traditional cultivations, before finally reaching the Barbarossa beach, reminding the tourists the history of the raids of the most famous pirates of the Mediterranean Sea.
